The senior Russian men's national team took over from the USSR side. Overall, the country has won the World Championship a record 27 times (1954, 1956, 1963-1971, 1973-1975, 1978-1983, 1986, 1989-1990, 1993, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2014). At the moment, Russia occupies third place in the IIHF world ratings. The country has won Olympic gold on eight separate occasions (1956, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1984, 1988, 1992). The first official match came on the 11th of March 1953, when the team beat Norway 6:0 in Moscow.
Every year, Russia competes in the Euro Hockey Tour, and it is made up of several stages: the Karjala Cup (Finland), the Channel One Cup (Russia) and other matches against the Czech Republic, Sweden and Finland. Every season comes to an end with the IIHF World Championship, and at the 2016 home tournament in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, Russia earned a bronze medal.
